About Gelderse Poort

Gelderse Poort is an extensive nature reserve situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Waal rivers in eastern Netherlands, within the province of Gelderland near the cities of Nijmegen and Arnhem. This protected area plays a crucial role in flood management and wetland conservation, featuring a mosaic of floodplains, forests, lakes, grasslands, and large river branches. It is part of the Gelderse Poort National Park, a prime example of Dutch efforts to restore natural river dynamics and biodiversity through controlled flooding and habitat restoration. The area is managed by Staatsbosbeheer and Staatsbedrijf Limburg. The park boasts rich birdlife, including species such as white-tailed eagles, kingfishers, and many migratory birds that rely on the wetlands during their journeys. Otters and beavers have also made notable comebacks here, signaling the success of habitat restoration. Visitors can enjoy numerous hiking and cycling trails winding through varied landscapes from riparian woods to open water zones, with vantage points offering panoramic views of the river and floodplains. Canoeing and fishing are popular in the rivers and side channels while seasonal guided tours and wildlife watching hide opportunities enhance the visitor experience. Gelderse Poort combines important ecological value with cultural heritage seen in historic dikes and nearby medieval towns. Its accessibility from urban centers makes it an ideal destination for day tours or longer trips focused on nature observation and quiet outdoor recreation. The reserve is celebrated for demonstrating sustainable coexistence between river management and nature conservation in the Low Countries.
